Here are some useful tips on building a shelter…
Feral cats often go unnoticed and uncared for in neighborhoods and industrial areas, allowing them to increase in population, which can lead to complaints and unnecessary trouble. Maintaining a well-cared-for colony will keep the cats as happy and healthy as possible. This will also keep your
neighborhood happy too. You can help the feral cats in your neighborhood by constructing outdoor cat shelters if you don’t have them in place already. If you already have one, you can replace the straw in the cat shelters before winter comes. Here are some tips on how to build one:
Build your feral cats homes that stay dry and accessible in any weather.
If your area gets a lot of snow or rain, build the houses on stilts
so the doors don’t get buried by heavy snowfall and water doesn’t get in during summer rains. Include two entrances in your cat houses so they can have an easy escape route to prevent themselves from getting trapped by other cats or predators. Make sure that your cats’ houses are accessible to you so you can easily get in and clean them every year, or to help an injured cat if you need to. Be sure to complete any repairs and change the straw before winter hits as most cats do not like changes in their environment. Lastly, provide your cats easy access to fresh water all winter by using a heated water bowl.
